Nailed It!

To mark the end of our baking adventures, the Year 6 students of Room 5 had a 'Nailed It!' competition. The students were divided into four groups and given a vanilla cupcake recipe.

They also received a picture of what they had to recreate on their cupcakes.

Shall we have a look at the final creations?

Group 1: Sesame Street

This is what they created....

NAILED IT!

Group 2: Cute Dogs

This is what they created....

NAILED IT!

Group 3: Farmyard Animals

This is what they created...

NAILED IT!!

Group 4: Nature

This is what they created....

NAILED IT!!

The cupcakes were judged based on taste and how similar their finished products were to the picture.

Here are the winners:

Best Individual Decoration: Blue Dog (created by Kylie)

Best Overall Decoration: Sesame Street
Best Cupcake (taste): Cute Dogs

The decoration was created using white icing and... food colouring! There were many multi-coloured hands by the end of the session! The students found it much harder than they thought to model the icing. One group did not follow the recipe properly, making their cupcake batter very runny! Can you guess which group that was?

What do you think of our creations? Which cupcake would you judge as being the best?

I liked the way that you added lts of pictures and how you showed what you wanted to make and then what they turned out like. I also like put some pictures of you making them. I also enjoyed looking at all of these pictures of these cupcakes. I also really liked the colours you used for these cupcakes. You have also inspired me to try making some cupcakes for my birthday or some event like that. I also REALLY like the way that you made a food thing not a painting thing. This is really good I loved looking at it and reading it.

You brought me back to when I was making a biscute at the park on a free park day. Did you think about added some feelings of what some kids liked about it or what they wanted to make next. I also think you could you could write a bit more about the finished product instaed of just putting NAILED IT, that would be a good idea because then people would know what your improvments might be or what you did NAIL.

Next time you could, Also add some more words about what you did and how lon g it took you to make them and also how long it took them to cook. You could you could also make a creative way of presenting this cool blog. Last improvment could be put more pictures of the people making the cupcakes that would make people want to look at the blog post more, because they can see the whole prosedure of making the cupcakes. Lastly I think that you should add more than just we gave the students a vainla cupcake recpie you could defantly make that better.

Anyways Byee Zack from Yaldhurst Model School (I love CUPCAKES YUMMM)

WOW! you knocked my socks of with some of these amazing cupcakes, especially the icing looked incredible and I can't believe you guys made cupcakes as incredibly awesome. I sure do like cupcakes and these looked delicious I wish I could just eat them all up. I liked that in your class you guys did this challenge because for some people it could have been their first time making cupcakes or doing icing so they might have found it hard but by the looks of it they gave it a shot and did their best and did superb!

I loved the sesame street cupcakes because the icing looked professional. You taught me that you don't have to do anything perfect you just gotta give it your best shot.

Next time you could even get groups to make up their own icing decorations and have a competition on that.

This looked like a super duper fun class project! I hope that this inspires other people about giving everything a go and that it's not about winning it's about having lots of fun. I also hope that we get to do something this awesome in my class. What a way to do fun baking by using awesome sesame street, rainbows and other cool things.
You guys could post some videos of you making the cupcakes.

What inspired you guys to do this? Did any of the teachers join in? You guys should have a week where it is just lots of baking and cooking competitions and become professional cooks. Also has anyone done more cooking after this fun experience?

These kids look like they could go on a professional show on tv and make cupcakes!
Hope you guys had lots of fun making them, because it sure did look like it.
Keep making incredible things and don't stop coming up with great ideas like this also keep up the great blogging.
    Yours sincerely Thom.

I just had my mind blown when I saw you guys get to make cupcakes I wish we were able to make cupcakes too.But sadly we have not had this idea even mentiond.my favourite one was where you made the puppy ones You did a great job just an idea you could have made the icing and the used a rolling pin and flattened the icing then used a circle shape to cut the circle then cut all the different shapes that It would look even more closer to the example! but great job though.

    yours sincerely Jonathon

My name is Denise a year 6 from Ruma Rima, St Bernadette School. Thank you for commenting on our class blog. I really appreciate that you liked it, also how it reminded you of a play you did before. What was the play about? And I'm sure that play was fun to do. No, it wasn't that easy to do because some of us didn't really understand it much and we had to us our mathematics skills to do it.
It was really fun to do and I'm sure you would of liked it the way I did. We will try to give you the recipe so you can try it out but overall, Thank you for the comment.
      Kind Regards,
      Denise

  8. Hi Ruma Rima,

What a cool idea. The pictures you have used are really professional. I wonder how they made them? Did you have to study them for a while before you started making your own versions?

I like that everyone gave it a really good go. I can see that the Farmyard group had a bit of a hiccup with their cupcake batter. Recipe reading can be tricky! I like that they gave it a go anyway.

Well done to the group that 'NAILED IT'. They didn't look easy, even though they were very simple examples.

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Aloha Olivia,Di you like our cupcakes my one was the pig. we decided to make these cupcakes because the year sevens would go to tech and do baking, so us year six's would bake at school. We decided to bake cupcakes and it also helped us in maths with the measuring and stuff. we used fondant to make the icing because we were talking about it in class and not many people new what it was so we experimented with it. Can't wait to see your classes next post.
