Blast off!

Last term, the school's Integrated Learning topic was EXPLORATION.

In Room 5, we explored what happens when acids and bases are mixed, as well as the energy transformations that occur.

Using the common household acids and bases (ie. vinegar and baking soda), we had fun with some experiments. Some worked better than others but we didn't give up until we succeeded!

The bottle was half-filled with vinegar. A teaspoon of baking soda was placed into a tissue, then the tissue was carefully dropped inside the bottle. A cork was put over the top and, propped up by some pencils, the bottle was flipped over.
As the baking soda and vinegar mixed, a gas was released. This gas built up inside the bottle, increasing the pressure, and eventually BOOM! The bottle flew up into the air!

Here is a more successful attempt!

We invited our parents to school one afternoon in a Celebration of Learning. Our boards were all decorated with everything we learnt over the term. We also showed the parents our experiments and they were impressed with the results!

If you want to find out in more detail the different things we did on the day, visit our individual blogs. We were asked to create and share a slideshow about what we did.

The vinegar/baking soda experiment is really easy - have a go yourself!!

  2. Hello Rūma Rima,
I am Alan from yaldhurst model school.

Great blog post. It is also a very catchy heading.

It reminded me of volcano models which erupts, it is just like yours except that yours is like a rocket.

If you want to improve it make a presentation of how it was before and how it was when you succeeded.
    Kind regards
    Alan

I really like this blog post because it is different to most that I have read I like that because it means that I like reading it because it is different so think of it this way if you think of different blogs to do then people will want to read them all not just skip past! Next time I think that you can make it look more colourful so if looks even better just imagine how much people will love that! I know right it is so amazing!

This blog is also amazing because it is not to short and it is not that long that also makes it fun to read and not just skip past because it is to long or to short! The bit that caught my eye was the video it was so epic I loved it make sure you keep up with that amazing work I really like it. What made you want to do this blog? Do you enjoy blogging?

and i just wanna say great job on trying this experiment and see if it worked, and you said some worked better than others and that's good, that means at least some of them DID work but then some did not.

I think I might try this at home or somewhere, because this looks like a pretty fun experiment

I think you could have less pictures in this post, but still it is really good.

How long did this take? ]

  6. Kia ora Ruma Rima, It's Thom here.
I really like science but we don't do it that often at my school so we don't get to do all this fun stuff that often or sometimes at all.

Anyway do you enjoy science? How come you decided to do this?
Next time could you write a bit less because it took ages to read through all of it and I was in a rush.

Anyway sorry about the tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny comment I am just in a rush.
Anyway hope you enjoy your science.
    Goodbye from Thom.

  8. Hello Ruma Rima! I am Sam from Yaldhurst Model School,

I like how you decided to add pictures to go with the writing. This is because it makes it easier to understand the writing.

I think that those "Rocket Ships" are pretty cool, I also think that the science behind it is cool too.

Anyway, it would be great if you could put all of the pictures in one big document so that we don't have to keep scrolling down. Apart from that, Great blog post!

How long did it take to make those things?

    Happy Blogging!

    Sam

  13. Hello Ruma Rima, I am Zack from Yaldy!

I really like this blog post because you have added lots of diffrent words and pictures of what you have done I think this is really good because it shows that you have done lots of work and used up lots of your time and putting effort into blogging I really like that Keep it up! Also I really like this blog post beause yet there is lots of pictures there is also lots of words and a good amount of ninfo in your blog post

Next time, I think that you can work on adding some more words is one place not spread all over the place I think that would make it much easier to read and understand! Also I think that you can improve on adding all of the pictures into one big doc so it is not all dangling down like a toilet roll I think that would make a really big chage in your blogging, so if you want some more people to come and have a look at your blog I think that you should do that!

This brought me back to when I was a year 4 and I was doing all different things to do with science and this is really like that! Also this brought me back to when I made a rocketship with my friends and I made it fly! I also really like this because it shows that you are putting time into your blogs! Also I think that if you want some more people to comment on your blogs keep blogging about things that other people to and it will bring them back!

    Was this fun?
    Did you like making this?
    Bye Zack from Yaldy!

  14. Kia ora Ruma rima, It's Thom here again, I just want to comment on this blog again to add some extra stuff I didn't say in my other comment.

I really want to do this activity in my class or at home or anywhere, Because it looks so fun and experimental, I never thought of the idea of putting the bottle upside down when it had the vinegar and baking soda in it. Because ages ago in my old class we did the same thing except we didn't put it upside down so it went like a rocket because we hadn't thought of that, But instead we did that volcano thing, We also put mentos in coke to do the volcano thing, It was quite cool but this looks a lot more fun and a lot cooler.

Next time maybe talk about the experience, Or get some of the kids to say if the enjoyed it or not or what they thought of it, Or even give so tips for how to do it and how much vinegar and baking soda to use, Because then for the people who don't know how to do it, Or do it really good they could do it and be successful with it.

Anway apart from that great job.
    Goodbye.
    -Thom.
